Winter, the time to strengthen the kidneys

According to traditional Chinese medicine, winter is the season when the kidneys are most active and also most vulnerable. The calendar period of the kidneys spans from the winter solstice (approximately December 21) to the beginning of spring (approximately March 20). In the daily cycle, the kidneys are most active between 5:00 PM and 7:00 PM.

The function of the kidneys in the body

The kidneys are essential organs for filtering blood and removing waste products and toxins from the body. Additionally, they regulate electrolyte balance, blood pressure, and fluid levels in the body. The kidneys are also linked to life energy – they store “essence,” which is the foundation for vitality and long-term health.

The subordinate organ of the kidneys: bladder

The bladder is closely connected to the functioning of the kidneys and serves to store and excrete urine. Its function directly depends on the health of the kidneys, as poor kidney function can lead to bladder issues, such as frequent infections or incontinence.

Physical signs of kidney weakness

Kidney problems can manifest in various ways:

  • Chronic fatigue and lack of energy.
  • Cold hands and feet.
  • Lower back or knee problems.
  • Dry skin and hair loss.
  • Dark circles under the eyes.
  • Brittle nails.

On an emotional level, kidney weakness is associated with fear, which can manifest as insecurity, panic attacks, or constant worry.

Foods that strengthen the kidneys

To strengthen the kidneys, it is important to consume nutrient-rich and warming foods:

  • Whole grains (buckwheat, millet, brown rice).
  • Legumes (beans, lentils).
  • Nuts and seeds (almonds, sesame).
  • Fish, eggs, poultry.
  • Dark leafy greens (kale, spinach).
  • Seaweed.
  • Warm drinks, such as ginger tea or herbal teas for the kidneys (nettle, dandelion).

Foods and drinks that weaken the kidneys

  • Avoid excessive consumption of the following:
  • Processed and salty foods.
  • Sweets and refined carbohydrates.
  • Alcohol and carbonated drinks.
  • Excessively cold or icy drinks.

Daily protocol for strengthening the kidneys

  1. Breakfast: start the day with warm porridge made from buckwheat or millet, sweetened with a bit of honey and enriched with sesame seeds.

  2. Morning drink: ginger tea to promote circulation and warm the body.

  3. Lunch: include brown rice, steamed dark green vegetables, and a protein source, such as fish or legumes.

  4. Afternoon bath: a warm bath with added magnesium salts for relaxation.

  5. Dinner: a light meal, such as lentil or pumpkin soup, with a piece of whole-grain bread.

  6. Evening tea: nettle or dandelion tea to support kidney function.

  7. Moxa therapy: use moxa on points that strengthen the kidneys, such as the “Shen Shu” point (in the lower back area).

Relaxation and meditation

Calming the mind is also essential for supporting the kidneys. Meditation helps balance emotions and reduce stress. Prepare a comfortable space:

  • Use a meditation cushion - Zafu filled with buckwheat hulls to support proper posture.
  • Place an eye pillow made of organic cotton and filled with lavender over your eyes to relax.

Meditation should last at least 10–15 minutes. Focus on your breathing and imagine warm energy flowing through your kidneys, strengthening and rejuvenating them.

Winter is the ideal time to care for and strengthen the kidneys. With a balanced diet, warm drinks, relaxing baths, and regular meditation, you can maintain vitality and good health throughout the year. Take care of your body and mind, and embrace the regenerative power of the winter season.
