Shoulderstand Pose

Salamba Sarvangasana, known as the Supported Shoulderstand Pose, Shoulderstand or Shoulderstand Pose, is one of the fundamental yet advanced asanas in yoga practice, classified among inversions. Inversions are yoga poses where the heart is positioned higher than the head. It involves an inverted position, with the head resting beneath the heart, while the body is supported by the hands and shoulders on the floor or suitable prop. The inversion in this asana stimulates the organs in the pelvis and abdomen, reviving blood circulation in vital organs such as the brain, heart, and lungs. Apart from physical strength, the Salamba Sarvangasana, or Shoulderstand Pose, aids in developing internal concentration and mental peace.

The Shoulderstand Pose can be quite challenging for the neck and shoulder girdle, especially for those who spend a lot of time behind a computer screen. In such cases, the crucial use of support under the shoulders reduces pressure on the cervical vertebrae and spine. The most suitable support for performing the Shoulderstand Pose is a block made of cork or foam. Opting for a foam block requires two blocks to support the entire shoulder girdle and trunk. If you choose a cork block, you'll need four to achieve softness while simultaneously opening the chest and facilitating breathing, allowing for a longer hold in the asana.

B.K.S. Iyengar was the first to use foam blocks in performing the Shoulderstand Pose. He emphasized the importance of precision, adaptation, and support in performing asanas to maximize benefits and prevent potential injuries. Today, blocks are indispensable in various yoga approaches and play a crucial role in safe, effective, and comfortable yoga practice, whether for beginners or those who have been practicing yoga for a longer period.
