The Story Behind Our Wooden Yoga Props
The use of wooden yoga props in the method of B.K.S. Iyengar began in the 1930s, when he was looking for ways to make yoga accessible to every body. He worked with blocks, wooden pieces, and simple everyday objects to create a practice that was safer, clearer, and more precise. What started as a practical solution gradually became one of the defining features of Iyengar Yoga.
His approach transformed the understanding of alignment, support, and therapeutic application. In Light on Yoga and through his work at the Ramamani Iyengar Memorial Yoga Institute, he made it clear that props are not shortcuts. They are tools for learning and awareness, helping the body understand direction, stability, and space within a pose.
Among all supportive tools, wooden blocks and backbenders hold a special place. Wood is firm, stable, and reliable. It does not collapse under weight. It does not adapt to the body. Precisely for this reason, it teaches clarity, steadiness, and precision in practice.
From Forest to Yoga Practice
Our wooden yoga blocks, Mini Backbenders, and Backbenders are made in Slovenia. They are crafted by Jure, a carpenter and dedicated Iyengar yoga practitioner from our community.
We met in class. Our collaboration grew from a shared practice and a clear understanding of what a well-made prop means for the body, alignment, and safety in a pose.
Jure works in a small workshop near Preddvor in the Gorenjska region. He owns his own forest, where he personally selects and cuts the trees. Most of the wood used for our props comes directly from his land. Only rarely, when necessary, does he source additional wood.
The path is simple and transparent. From tree to workshop. From workshop to yoga practice.
Each piece is cut, assembled, and finished by hand. The wood is naturally dried to ensure long-term stability and durability. Every surface is carefully sanded so it feels smooth to the touch and reliable in use. These products are made for years of practice, not a single season.
Because Jure practices Iyengar yoga himself, he understands what a prop must offer in a pose.
A Backbender must safely support the thoracic spine.
A wooden block must provide firm grounding in standing poses.
A Mini Backbender must allow gradual and controlled chest opening.
This is not just a wooden product. It is a thoughtfully crafted, locally made tool for deep and precise yoga practice.

Why wooden yoga props still matter
In a time dominated by foam and lightweight synthetic materials, solid wood offers a different experience. Stability. Clarity. Reliability.
These are not abstract qualities but tangible factors that shape the depth of practice.
Wood provides:
- structural stability that does not compress under weight
- clear feedback in alignment, since the material does not absorb mistakes
- long-term durability for years of consistent use
- reliable support in therapeutic work, where precision is essential
When you step onto a wooden block in Trikonasana, you feel direction and firmness beneath the foot or hand. The support is direct, without softness that would blur your connection to the ground.
When you lie over a Backbender, the thoracic spine opens without collapsing. The wood remains stable, and the body organizes itself around a clear structure. Because the material does not yield, the body learns with greater precision, awareness, and responsibility.
Wood does not adapt to you. It asks you to adapt with intelligence. That is why it strengthens awareness, steadiness, and discipline in practice.
Wooden yoga props are especially valuable in:
- Iyengar Yoga, where precision of alignment is fundamental
- therapeutic and restorative sequences, where stable support allows longer holds
- backbends, where safe thoracic support is essential
- postural improvement, as clear structure encourages correct body organization
- serious and long-term practice, where material quality truly matters
From the early innovations of B.K.S. Iyengar to a small forest in northern Slovenia, the intention remains the same: to create high-quality wooden yoga props that support precision, safety, and gradual development in practice.
By choosing our products, you are not only choosing solid material. You are supporting local craftsmanship, Slovenian expertise, short supply chains, and a responsible relationship with wood as a natural resource. Each piece is made in a small workshop from carefully selected timber, shaped with durability and long-term use in mind.
At RunToYoga, you can explore our handcrafted wooden Backbenders and blocks and experience the difference that solid wood and local production bring to your practice.
